John of God (João de Deus)
“I heal no-one... God heals.”
— João Texeira de Faria
João Texeira de Faria, better known as John of God (João de Deus in Portuguese), is arguably the most powerful
healer alive today. He is an unconscious trance medium who allows discarnate spirits, called “Entities” in Brazil,
to work through his body. João has been conducting healing sessions 3 days a week at the Casa de Dom Inácio
(the House of St. Ignatius) for almost 30 years. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people travel to the Casa each week from all over
the world seeking help for a wide variety of conditions – physical, emotional and spiritual. João is an unconscious
medium and so has no recollection of what takes place during the healing sessions. He claims to have no healing power of his own,
but that his healing is a gift from God and as such he cannot charge money for it.
João was born into a very poor family in central Brazil. His formal education consisted of 3 months at school at the
age of 7. His healing work began when he was still a teenager after he encountered a spirit, a beautiful fair-haired woman,
who instructed him to go to a certain healing centre. Once there he blacked out for several hours. On regaining conciousness he
was told that he had performed healings on many people.
During his early life, João suffered much persecution as he travelled from town to town performing spontaneous healings
while unconscious. As news of his healings spread he was subjected to beatings, jail and banishment from towns, usually instigated
by members of the medical profession or the Church. Eventually he took refuge in the military barracks in Brasilia where he was
given protection in return for the healings he performed on military personnel. After nine years there he was instructed by the
Entities to buy a small fazenda on land which later proved extremely rich in emeralds. Proceeds from his emerald mine allowed him
to establish his healing centre in Abadiânia.
Many court cases have been brought against João, none of which have been successful. He has now been given the protection
of a court precedent to allow him to continue his work.
